My three economic policy priorities for 2009 are: maintain price stability; shrink and recapitalise the financial sector; and co-ordinate globally.

The case for UK membership of the euro

There are four reasons why the UK might change its position on euro membership. These reasons are not new. What is new is that due to the financial crisis they weigh stronger than the benefits of monetary independence.

Forget about monetary policy

Interest rate cuts may be desirable, but they are ineffective in dealing with the current crisis. The only effective instrument to prevent to sustained economic downturn is fiscal policy.
