At face value, the economy’s performance seemed to justify the government’s re-election. At 6 per cent, Ireland’s GDP growth last year beat most other countries in the EU. What lies behind these figures is less impressive. If Ireland had its own central bank and Jean Claude Trichet were its President, he would have died of a heart attack about two years ago.

Today, outgoing Dutch finance minister Gerrit Zalm will hand over the keys of the treasury to his successor Social Democrat Wouter Bos. Mr Zalm is liked and respected by the Dutch people for his integrity and his Calvinist discipline.
